Sure, summer is your time to rest a bit, catch your breath, and enjoy some well-deserved “you time.” However, many also see it as an opportunity to get ahead with ongoing professional development. Take a break, but also take advantage of online Business Education courses available on-demand to supplement your optometric school studies (and, yes, you can view them poolside; we won’t tell).

When you have clearly defined your personal long-term goals, you’re better equipped to establish short-term goals that lead to your long-term destination. Of course, the path is not always a straight line forward.
As you navigate through the job interview process, demonstrate a willingness for flexibility in the hours and days you’ll work, aligning your availability to what the hiring practice needs. Show the hiring OD or interviewer that you’re

motivated to learn and grow with the practice, serving their needs while you’re working your way to your long-term goals!
Remember, early opportunities might not appear as your “ideal position,” but they can support your long-term goals. Be open to different work environments and look at the potential they bring for your future. For example, student debt is growing annually, and you may want to consider taking a shorter-term position that can ease or eradicate financial burden, removing this as a significant hurdle while you gain practical professional experience. Be realistic with your financial expectations and consider the entire benefits package that comes with a job offer.
When looking for a job, no matter which avenue you choose to take, remember the needs of the hiring practice and be sure to bring these key elements as you travel from short-term path to long-term vision:
- Be flexible.
- Be a team player.
- Be enthusiastic!
