Back-to-School Seasonâfor Students, Practices, and Patients
While students like you are preparing to resume your educational pursuits, eye care practices are also prepping to give their patients what they need most for a vision-healthy back-to-school season. This could be a perfect time to start or grow a practice, too!
- Continuing and completing your education plan makes you a âready candidateâ for practices that will be ready to hire new ODs, especially during the upcoming year-end rush.
- Practices are already ramping up their marketing and hiring activity to help patients get the most from their vision care benefits before the year is over. A busy practice might need your help to manage the year-end spike in business!
- Starting your own practice? This is a perfect season to market to patients of all ages for their back-to-school and year-end eye care needs. Use this time to attract and grow your base of patients.
When youâre trained and ready to inform and assist your patients with eye exams and eyewear selection during this season, youâll improve your patientsâ lives while helping sustain (and grow) your patient base. Thatâs just smart thinking, right?

âThrough this program, I have had the opportunity to not only contribute to the long-term growth of a private practice, but also provide eye care in an optometrist-scarce area,â said Dr. Hasnain Nizar, a 2023 SLR program recipient. âBy alleviating financial pressures, I am able to focus my efforts and attention on reducing barriers to care and working towards making eye care accessible to allâand Iâd like to open up my own practice someday.â

Pro Tips:
â3 Interview Tips to Cover Your Needsâ
by Kristen Hoffman, VSPÂŽ Talent Aquisition Specialist
When applying for a new job, hopeful candidates rightly put the hiring practiceâs needs front and center. Even so, be sure to consider your needs, too, to ensure it can result in a win-win agreement for everyone involved.
Hereâs what you should keep in mind to find a perfect match:
- Know your non-negotiables. Are you looking for a part-time or full-time position? Do you need certain days off for other commitments? Is salary or a bonus more important? What location are you interested in? Which modality (private practice, corporate, retail)? All of these personal parameters will help you discern which practice will best suit youâand suit them tooâas you move throughout your job hunt.
- Approach it as a two-way street. A job interview is just as important for you, the candidate, as it is for the practice that will consider you. Ask your questions, consider your non-negotiables, and be especially observant of a practiceâs mission, method, and organizational setup; does it all (or mostly all) match what youâre looking for in your next career move? Again, look for the win-win for the best assignment and eventual outcome.
- Be confident in YOU. Yes, be yourself! The right practice will certainly consider your own personality, your personal style, and your professionalism. Be confident that you are right for the job and let your personality shine through!
